What if I get results--will this stuff come back later to haunt me?
With EMDR , studies consistently show no return of symptoms at various follow-up intervals when
treatment fidelity is adhered to. This has also been the case in my own clinical experience. This is not to say that enduring another, new traumatic experience or encountering triggers that weren't previously targeted won't affect you similarly. If you discontinue EMDR before completion of all treatment phases, it is possible that effects may not last. It is best to discuss this with me thoroughly before commencing EMDR .
Studies suggest that a person that has been traumatized previously will be more vulnerable to developing symptoms of trauma if subsequent traumatization occurs, whether or not treatment of the original trauma occurred. Fatigue, stress, and inadequate nutrition can amplify any lingering effects of trauma. In other words, if someone had dissociative symptoms (e.g. spaciness) prior to treatment, that person will have a propensity to become spacey if they don't adequately attend to their needs for proper sleep, diet, and medication.
With Sensorimotor Psychotherapy , I am unaware of research to determine long-term effectiveness. It is, however, an integrative technique that brings unconscious material into felt experience . This makes it hard to un-experience, un-remember, un-realize, and un-feel what is integrated.
